Arthur R. “Artie” McFerrin, Jr., earned his BS in 1965 and a MS in 1969, both in Chemical Engineering from Texas A&M University. Artie began his career in 1967 with Shell Chemical before becoming an independent plant manager in 1972. In 1975, he founded KMCO, a chemical processing and manufacturing company, which in 1983 was named by Inc. magazine, America’s Fastest Growing Privately Owned Business. Artie also owns South Coast Terminals, which was named a Mays Business School Aggie 100 business in 2005. Artie is also a partner in several other chemical processing plants. He has served Texas A&M as chairman of the Chemical Engineering Advisory Board, President’s Corps of Cadets Board of Visitors, Texas Research Foundation and the Chancellor’s Council. He has endowed the chemical engineering department, the Marilyn Byrne Student Success Center in the education department and the Becky Gates Children Center. He also named the Robert M. Gates Room in the MSC and the Bill Byrne Student Athletic Center in Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park. He sponsored a chair in the education department, a professorship in chemical engineering and contributed a quote wall to the Association of Former Students Center. Artie was awarded the Association of Former Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2008. In addition, Artie is active in local community organizations in the Houston area and is a member of the 12th Man Foundation Houston Champions Council. He has contributed to the 12th Man Foundation, namely the McFerrin Indoor Athletic Center and the Cox-McFerrin Center for Aggie Basketball. Artie and his wife, Dorothy, have two children: Jeffrey ’92, and Jennifer, a graduate of UCLA, and four grandchildren.
